How to Grow Garden Verbena (Verbena × hybrida) in Egypt: A Complete Guide | tna W rna

Why grow Garden Verbena (Verbena × hybrida) in Egypt

Garden verbena (Verbena × hybrida) is one of the most rewarding bedding flowers you can raise from seed. It forms a low, spreading mound roughly 15 to 45 cm tall and 15 to 60 cm wide, smothered in clusters of small, jewel-toned flowers from late spring right through to autumn. In an Egyptian garden it shines in borders, edging, hanging baskets and pots, and it keeps blooming continuously as long as you remove the spent flowers. Best of all, it is fairly drought-tolerant once established, which suits our climate well.

Best planting time in Egypt

In Egypt, treat garden verbena as a cool-season bedding annual rather than following the European calendar. Seed-grown verbena dislikes hot, humid summers, and the plant is killed by frost. Luckily, Egyptian winters are essentially frost-free, so we simply shift the cycle earlier. Sow seed indoors or in trays in early autumn (September to October), then transplant outside in October to November. The plants establish and flower through the mild winter and spring (roughly November to March or April), avoiding the worst Delta summer heat and humidity. In Upper Egypt, where the air is drier and sunnier, the season can stretch a little later into spring; in the humid Delta, aim to finish the main bloom before peak summer arrives.

How to plant

Sow seed on the surface of damp, fresh compost and cover it only with a thin layer of vermiculite. Light helps germination, so never bury the seed deeply. Keep the trays on a warm windowsill or in a heated propagator at about 21 to 27°C. The seed is moisture-sensitive and prone to damping off, so keep the medium on the dry side until the seedlings appear. Germination usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks (14 to 28 days). Sow roughly 8 to 12 weeks before you plan to set plants out, harden off the seedlings gradually, then plant into a sunny, well-drained bed. Garden verbena demands full sun, at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily; in too much shade it flowers poorly and is far more prone to mildew. Space plants about 50 cm apart so air can move freely between them.

Fertilizing

Verbena is not a heavy feeder. Give a light application of a complete fertilizer such as 16-4-8 in mid- to late spring, and again after you trim the plants back. Plants growing in poor soil may need feeding a little more often, but over-fertilizing is unnecessary and does not improve flowering. If you are growing verbena in containers, a potassium-rich liquid feed (for example a tomato fertiliser) encourages blooming; start feeding about a month after planting.

Care & watering

Well-drained soil is non-negotiable. Verbena will not tolerate soil that stays wet, which causes root and crown rot. While the plants are blooming, give one thorough watering each week if they have not received about 25 mm (1 inch) of rain that week. Water at the base and avoid wetting the foliage, as overhead watering encourages disease. Watch for spider mites (worst on drought-stressed plants), aphids, whitefly, thrips and leaf miners, plus slugs and snails in wet spells. The main diseases are powdery mildew, Botrytis blight and root rot. Manage them with full sun, generous spacing for air flow, no overhead watering, and insecticidal soap or neem oil for soft-bodied pests.

Harvest

Garden verbena is grown for its display rather than a crop, so your “harvest” is a long, continuous show of colour. Deadhead regularly to keep new flowers coming. If blooming slows in summer heat, cut the whole plant back by about one quarter of its height and spread, then water and feed lightly; it usually returns to full bloom within 2 to 3 weeks. You can also snip small bunches for cheerful, fragrant cut flowers.

Where to get the seeds

Success starts with good seed. At tna W rna you can order fresh verbena flower seeds and have them delivered across Egypt, ready to sow in early autumn for a winter-spring display. Grab a packet of Verbena seeds, prepare a sunny, well-drained spot, and follow the steps above for months of colour in your garden.
