Tomatoes are one of the most rewarding crops to grow at home in Egypt. With the right timing and a sunny spot, you can harvest fresh, flavourful tomatoes from a balcony, rooftop or small garden. Here is everything you need to get started.
The best sowing seasons are autumn (September–November) and early spring (February–March), when temperatures are mild. Avoid the peak summer heat, which stresses the plants and reduces fruit set.
When seedlings have 4–6 true leaves, move them to larger pots (at least 10–15 litres) or to the ground, spacing plants 30–40 cm apart. Tomatoes need full sun, 6+ hours a day.
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist — irregular watering causes cracked fruit and blossom-end rot. Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer once flowering begins.
Stake or cage the plants and remove the small side-shoots (suckers) on tall varieties to direct energy into fruit.
Tomatoes are ready in about 70–90 days. Pick them when fully coloured and slightly soft for the best flavour.
