Zonal or bedding geranium (botanically Pelargonium x hortorum, and a Pelargonium rather than a true Geranium) is one of the most rewarding flowering plants you can raise from seed. It is sold in Egyptian seed shops under the name جيرانيوم (also called الجارونا or الغرنوقي), and it rewards a little patience with rounded heads of colour that keep coming for months. The plants are compact, look superb in beds and containers alike, and tolerate the mild Egyptian winter beautifully when you sow at the right time. The one thing they will not forgive is the brutal heat of an Egyptian summer, which is exactly what the timing below is built around.
In Egypt the smart move is to sow from late summer into autumn, roughly mid-August through November. Seed-grown geraniums are slow, needing about 13 to 15 weeks from sowing to their first flowers, and they perform best at around 16 to 24°C. An autumn sowing means seedlings establish through the cooling months and bloom across the mild winter and gentle spring, well before temperatures climb past 35°C. In the Delta, with its milder Mediterranean influence, an autumn start gives lovely spring colour; a little afternoon shade helps as summer approaches. In hotter, drier Upper Egypt, sow slightly later, keep to the coolest months, and provide afternoon shade. Avoid sowing into the May to September heat entirely.
Start seed in trays or small pots of clean growing mix. Cover the seed only lightly, with about 3 mm of mix, since light is not needed for germination. Keep the mix warm at 21 to 24°C and seedlings should emerge within 7 to 10 days. After germination, grow them on a little cooler, averaging about 16 to 24°C, with warmer days around 21 to 24°C and cooler nights near 16 to 18°C to keep the seedlings short and sturdy. Once the first set of true leaves appears, move each seedling into its own pot. Harden the young plants off for about 7 to 10 days before planting out. In beds, space plants 30 to 36 cm apart; in containers, allow roughly 3 to 5 plants per 25 to 30 cm pot.
At planting time, work a balanced starter fertilizer into the soil, such as a 10-20-10 or 10-10-10 blend at a modest rate. Through the growing season, keep the plants fed but not forced: feed container plants with a dilute water-soluble fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks, and top up beds with additional fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks. Steady, gentle feeding supports continuous flowering without pushing soft, leafy growth that pests love.
Plant geraniums in well-drained soil and give them plenty of sun, at least 4 hours of direct sun and ideally about 6 hours a day for the best flowering. In very hot spots, afternoon shade is a real help. Water regularly after planting, but let the soil dry out a little between waterings and never allow the plants to wilt. Try to keep water off the leaves to reduce disease. In hot, dry weather, container plants may need watering 2 to 3 times per week. Watch for aphids, caterpillars (including the geranium budworm), spider mites and whiteflies, and for diseases such as bacterial leaf spot, Botrytis grey mould (worse in cool, damp, wet-foliage conditions) and edema (corky spots from overwatering). Good air circulation, dry foliage and enough sun prevent most trouble.
With geranium the reward is the flowers, not a crop to pick. Seed-grown plants come into bloom roughly 13 to 15 weeks after sowing, so an autumn sowing rewards you across winter and spring. To keep the show going, deadhead regularly: snip off spent flower heads before they set seed and the plant will keep producing fresh blooms throughout its season. Cut a few stems for the vase if you like, then keep deadheading for months of colour.
To get started, choose quality seed from a reliable Egyptian source. At tna W rna you can pick up Geranium Mix Seeds (بذور إبرة الراعي الجيرانيوم ميكس), a colourful mixed selection that is ideal for the autumn sowing window described above. Sow them in late summer to autumn, keep them warm to germinate, and you will have sturdy seedlings ready to flower through the cool Egyptian months. Order your geranium mix seeds from tna W rna and follow the timing in this guide for the best results.
