White Radish stands apart from the little red salad types with its clean, pearly-white roots and a smooth, mild flavour. The flesh is crisp and juicy with a gentle peppery bite rather than a sharp burn, so it stays pleasant whether eaten raw or cooked. Sliced thin it brings a fresh crunch to salads, and it is a classic choice for quick pickling and for adding to soups and stews, where its mild character softens beautifully. Its long, smooth white form and tender texture make it one of the most versatile radishes you can grow at home.

Planting

White Radish is a cool-season crop that is direct-sown where it will grow, because it dislikes having its roots disturbed and is not transplanted. Sow the seed straight into well-prepared soil, setting larger white/winter-type seed about 2 cm deep (salad-sized radishes go shallower, around 1 cm). For winter and larger roots, space plants about 15-20 cm apart, with roughly 15 cm between rows so each root has room to swell. Seedlings usually emerge in about 3 to 10 days, commonly within 4 to 7 days in warm soil. Choose an open, sunny site; light shade is acceptable in the hottest part of the season to ease bolting. In Egypt this is a winter crop: the reliable sowing window is the mild season from mid/late October through February, when day temperatures sit comfortably in the cooler range the crop prefers. Make small repeat sowings every 10-14 days for a continuous supply, and avoid sowing in hot, dry weather, since heat pushes plants to bolt and run to flower.

Fertilizing

Prepare the bed with aged compost before sowing to give roots a steady, gentle start. At midseason, side-dress with more aged compost to keep growth moving. Avoid fresh manure and high-nitrogen fertilizers, as these encourage lush leafy tops at the expense of the root you actually want. A balanced or low-nitrogen feed is preferred, and as a root crop White Radish responds well to a phosphorus-leaning blend such as 5-10-10.

Care

Keep the soil consistently moist for fast, even growth and crisp, unsplit roots. Aim for about 2.5 cm of water per week, soaking the soil thoroughly at least once a week; sandy soils dry out faster and need watering more often than heavy clay. Irregular or insufficient water makes roots woody and hot-tasting. Thin the seedlings about a week after they emerge, giving winter/white types around 5-10 cm of space or more so the roots can develop fully. Watch for common pests such as flea beetles, which leave small holes in the leaves, cabbage root fly maggots that tunnel into roots, and slugs and snails on young seedlings; a floating row cover together with steady moisture helps prevent flea beetle and root fly damage. Larger white/winter roots are typically ready in about 50-60 days, often pushing their shoulders up out of the soil as a sign. Harvest promptly, because over-mature roots turn woody, pithy and prone to splitting.
