The English Daisy (Bellis perennis) is a beloved cool-season ornamental prized for its rounded double pompon flowers in cheerful shades of red, pink and white, each sitting neatly above a low, tidy rosette only about 15 cm tall. This compact, button-flowered form brings a soft, classic charm to bed edges, borders and containers, and its long display makes it one of the best choices for winter and early-spring colour in the Egyptian garden.
In Egypt, sow in autumn (roughly late August to October) for flowering through the mild winter into spring. Surface-sow into fine, moist soil, pressing the seed in and barely covering it (no more than about 3 mm), as light aids germination. Use cell packs, flats or direct sowing. Germination takes around 15-25 days at about 21 C. You can also start indoors 8-10 weeks before planting out. Give full sun to partial shade, with afternoon shade where it is warm. Space plants about 15 cm apart.
English Daisy likes heavy fertility, so grow it in organically rich, fertile soil. Work compost or organic matter into the bed at planting, then feed early in the growing season to support strong, abundant flowering.
Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained; this daisy dislikes drought and needs ample water, especially in warm weather. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong bloom and limit self-seeding. It is generally trouble-free, though good drainage helps prevent issues such as rust. In the Delta and on the Alexandria coast, sow September-October; in hotter Upper Egypt, start a little later (October-November) with afternoon shade.
