Red Carrot Seeds give you a striking, deeply colored root that turns any plate or garden bed into something special. The roots are crisp and naturally sweet, with the warm, earthy aroma carrots are loved for, and their rich red hue makes them stand out both in the kitchen and on the table. They are a beautiful choice for fresh salads, juices, roasting, and colorful garnishes, while their straight, smooth shape — grown in the right loose soil — makes them just as pleasing to look at as they are to eat. As a cool-season root vegetable, this carrot rewards a little patience with sweet, well-colored roots grown through the mild months.

Planting

Carrots are a cool-season crop and do not grow well in hot weather, so timing matters. In Egypt they are grown mainly as a winter vegetable, suited to the mild winters of about November to February. For the cooler Nile Delta and Lower Egypt, sow from roughly late August or September through November; in the warmer Upper Egypt, push the window later, from about October through December, since late-summer soil stays hot for longer there. Sow directly where the plants will grow, as carrots are not transplanted — their taproots are easily damaged. Plant the seed shallowly, covering it with about 0.6 to 1.3 cm of soil (a shallow drill about 1 cm deep works well), and do not let the soil crust over before the seedlings emerge; a fine cover of sand, vermiculite, or compost helps. Seeds germinate best at 13 to 18 C and are slow and uneven, typically taking 14 to 21 days to appear. Choose a spot in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct light per day, ideally 8 to 10 hours, and deep, loose, well-drained sandy loam free of stones, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0 to 6.8. Loose soil produces straight, smooth roots, while stones and clods cause forking. For a continuous harvest, make succession sowings every 3 to 4 weeks across the cool season.

Fertilizing

Carrots have a light-to-medium nutrient requirement, so they don't need heavy feeding. Work well-rotted manure or compost into the soil before planting. Avoid excess nitrogen — on fertile Nile silt this is especially important, as too much nitrogen causes leafy tops and forked, hairy roots. As a side-dressing, apply about 60 mL of a nitrogen fertilizer (such as 21-0-0) per 3 m of row roughly 6 weeks after the seedlings emerge, placing it to the side of the plants and watering it in.

Care

Give carrots consistent, even moisture — roughly 2.5 cm of water per week from irrigation, since natural rainfall is negligible in Egypt. Water deeply once a week on heavier soils and twice a week on sandy Delta or desert-reclamation soils, keeping the surface moist and crust-free during the slow germination period, then reducing watering near harvest to prevent the roots from cracking. Thin the seedlings once their tops are about 5 to 10 cm tall, spacing them roughly 4 to 8 cm apart in the row, with rows about 30 to 45 cm apart; snip rather than pull so you don't disturb the neighbors, and remember that wider spacing yields larger roots. Watch for pests such as the carrot rust fly, whose larvae tunnel into roots, along with wireworms, cutworms, and root maggots, plus slugs and snails on young seedlings; aster yellows, spread by leafhoppers, causes hairy, bitter roots and yellow tops. Common diseases include Alternaria and Cercospora leaf blights, while stony or compacted soil causes forking and splitting. Roots generally mature about 65 to 100 days from seeding depending on variety, with maincrop carrots around 90 days and baby carrots in about 4 to 6 weeks. Harvest at usable size, lifting before the roots greatly exceed 2.5 cm in diameter for best quality; watering the day before, or digging after rain, makes lifting easier.
