Petunia (Petunia × hybrida) is an annual bedding ornamental grown purely for its non-stop, brilliantly coloured trumpet flowers — there is no edible harvest here, just relentless colour. Its blooms blanket beds, borders, window boxes and hanging baskets, making it one of the most rewarding decorative flowers for sunny spots and a cheerful focal point through the cool season.
Direct seeding is not recommended; start seed in trays. For Egypt, sow indoors or in trays in late summer to early autumn (around September), allowing roughly 6-8 weeks for larger cells before transplanting. Do not cover the seed — petunia needs light to germinate, so sow on the surface, adding at most a very thin layer of vermiculite to hold the seed. Germination takes about 6-10 days at 22-25°C. After germination, grow on cooler at roughly 16-24°C. Prick out once the first pair of true leaves appears, harden off, and transplant outdoors from October-November when soil is reliably above 15°C. Space grandiflora and multiflora types about 30 cm apart, milliflora types 10-15 cm, and spreading types at least 45 cm. Give them full sun — at least 5-6 hours of direct sun daily.
Petunias are heavy feeders. At planting, work a balanced granular fertilizer (10-10-10 or 12-12-12) into the soil at about 1 kg per 9-10 m². Then feed with a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants every 2-3 weeks; container plants every 2 weeks and spreading types weekly. Controlled-release products applied at planting are a good alternative, otherwise feed roughly monthly.
Water in-ground petunias thoroughly about once a week, soaking the soil to 15-20 cm; avoid frequent shallow watering. Containers and spreading types need more, sometimes daily. Deadhead spent flowers to keep blooms coming. Watch for aphids, spider mites, whiteflies and caterpillars, treating with insecticidal soap or neem oil. The plants are mostly disease-free, but in humid Delta winters water at the base and keep foliage dry to avoid Botrytis and petal blight.
