Drummond's Phlox (Phlox drummondii) is a beloved annual prized for its dense clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that blanket the plant in cheerful shades of pink, red, white and lilac. Compact and mounding at roughly 0.1-0.5 m in height and spread, it makes a tidy edging, a low border, or a generous splash of colour in pots and window boxes. Its soft, honeyed fragrance and long display make it a charming ornamental for cool-season gardens and a magnet for early pollinators.

Planting

Sow the seed about 3 mm deep and cover it well, as this phlox needs darkness to germinate rather than surface sowing. Aim for a soil temperature near 16-18C; seedlings usually emerge within 5-10 days. In Egypt grow it as a winter annual: direct-sow in the open garden from early-to-mid October, or start in a nursery tray in early October and transplant in late October to early November. Since phlox resents root disturbance, direct sowing is often best. Space plants about 20-30 cm apart in full sun (light shade is tolerated) on fertile, moist, well-drained soil. In hotter Upper Egypt, sow early and offer light afternoon shade.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced fertilizer that is not too high in nitrogen, favouring potassium, so the plant produces flowers rather than excess leaves. Apply a balanced slow-release feed at the start of the growing season, then supplement with a liquid feed during flowering to keep the display full and bright through the winter months.

Care

Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, watering at the base and avoiding wet foliage to limit fungal disease. Good air circulation and proper spacing reduce powdery mildew and leaf spot, a real concern in the humid Delta. Watch for spider mites, which cause fine yellow stippling and browning; treat early with insecticidal soap. Deadhead regularly to prolong blooming, which runs roughly early December through April before the spring-summer heat ends the season.
