Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) earns its place with tidy, clover-shaped flower heads wrapped in stiff, papery bracts that glow in jewel-bright purple, magenta, pink, and white. The blooms feel almost dry to the touch even on the plant, holding their colour for weeks and making them a favourite for everlasting dried bouquets as well as fresh-cut arrangements. Bushy and dependable, it brings non-stop colour to sunny borders and containers right through the hottest months.
This frost-tender, warm-season annual loves heat. Start seed indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last frost, surface-sowing and barely covering with around 3 mm of fine media. Soaking seed overnight speeds things along. Germination takes roughly 5-14 days at a steady 21-26 C. Harden off seedlings and plant out only once nights are mild and soil is consistently above about 21 C, spacing plants 15-30 cm apart in full sun (6-8 hours daily).
A light feeder that needs little or no extra feeding. Work compost into the bed at planting; if soil is poor, one light dose of balanced slow-release granular fertilizer at planting is enough. Avoid over-feeding, which pushes leafy growth and fewer flowers.
Keep evenly moist while establishing, then ease off; it is notably heat- and drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering and overhead watering to prevent fungal disease. Pinch the first flowers for bushier plants. Blooming from summer to frost, it stays largely trouble-free in Egypt's dry heat.
