Scarlet Flax, also known as Flowering Flax, is one of the easiest and most rewarding annuals you can scatter into a garden. Its slender stems rise 10-50 cm and carry saucer-shaped flowers about 4 cm across, each glowing rose-pink to vivid scarlet with a deep, dark centre. Individual blooms last roughly a day but are replaced so quickly that the plant stays in colour for weeks, making it a favourite for informal borders, wildflower drifts, and cottage-style beds.
Direct-sow outdoors where the plants are to grow, as flax dislikes transplanting. In Egypt, sow in the cool season: in the Delta and Lower Egypt sow during October-November for late-winter to spring bloom, while hotter Upper Egypt is best sown early, around October, to flower before intense heat arrives. Sow shallowly, barely covering the seed to about 5 mm, since light aids germination. Choose a full-sun spot (6+ hours daily) with light, free-draining loam or sandy soil. Seedlings emerge in roughly 20-25 days, sometimes within 10-14 days in warm conditions. Thin plants to about 15 cm apart, and sow again every 2-3 weeks to extend the display.
Keep it lean. Avoid added fertilizer and manure, because rich soil produces leaf at the expense of flowers. Light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil gives the best bloom, so no routine feeding is needed through the season.
Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and establishment, then water less as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Flowers appear from late spring through summer into autumn in mild conditions; in Egypt enjoy a long show from late winter into spring before summer heat ends it. Around early to mid summer, cut back about half of the flowering stems by half to prolong bloom. It is generally pest- and disease-free, with only occasional slugs, snails, aphids, cutworms, or grasshoppers. Leave a few seed heads to mature and it will often self-seed and return next season.
