Scarlet Flax (Linum grandiflorum) is one of the simplest and most rewarding annuals you can sow. From the Linaceae family, it carries airy, saucer-shaped blooms about 4 cm wide in glowing rose-pink to scarlet, each with a striking dark centre, dancing on slender stems 10-50 cm tall. Each flower lasts roughly a single day, but it is quickly replaced, keeping the display going for weeks. Ideal for borders, drifts, and naturalistic flower beds.
Direct-sow outdoors after the last frost in spring, or in autumn in mild climates such as Egypt. Flax dislikes transplanting, so always sow where it is to grow. Cover the seed barely, to about 5 mm, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, which takes about 20 to 25 days (sometimes 10-14 days in warm conditions). Choose a full-sun spot with light, free-draining loam or sandy soil. Thin seedlings to about 15 cm apart.
Feed sparingly. Avoid added fertilizer and manure, since rich soil reduces flowering. Light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil gives the best bloom display, and no routine feeding is needed through the season.
Reduce watering once established, as the plant is drought-tolerant. Sow again every 2-3 weeks to extend bloom, and cut back about half of the flowering stems by half in early to mid summer to prolong flowering. Generally pest- and disease-free; watch occasionally for slugs, snails, and aphids. Leave some seed heads to mature and it will self-seed for next season.
