CI is a seeded selection of common Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), the warm-season turf that gives Egyptian gardens their classic low, dense, deep-green carpet. Rather than a cut flower, it is a tough perennial lawn grass that spreads by creeping stolons and underground rhizomes, weaving a fine-textured surface that takes heat, drought and constant foot traffic in its stride and bounces back quickly after wear - ideal for play areas, walkways and ornamental lawns.
Bermuda needs full sun - six or more hours of direct light a day - and warm soil, so sow from mid-March to June, or again in early autumn. Prepare a firm, level seedbed and adjust pH above 5.0 (5.8-6.5 is ideal). Broadcast the seed, then drag a leaf rake so it settles into only the top 0.3 cm of soil; sowing deeper can stop germination. Germination starts near 20 C and is fastest at 25-40 C, typically within 7-10 days, reaching near-full cover by about 45 days when weeds are kept down.
Hold off feeding until the grass has fully greened up in spring. Through the season apply nitrogen at about 0.25-0.5 kg per 100 square metres per feed, split across early, mid and late summer for a total of roughly 1-2 kg per 100 square metres. Use the lower rate on clay and the higher rate on sandy soil, and avoid nitrogen in early autumn, as it encourages large patch disease.
Water deeply but rarely - about 2-2.5 cm only when the lawn shows stress - and cut back as growth slows over winter. Mow often at 2.5-5 cm, never taking more than a third of the blade. Watch for spring dead spot, dollar spot and pests such as mole crickets and armyworms, and stay ahead of crabgrass and sedges during establishment.
