Rudbeckia hirta, the beloved Black-Eyed Susan or Gloriosa Daisy, lights up the garden with bold golden-yellow petals ringing a dark chocolate-brown central cone. The long-lasting, daisy-like blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies and make excellent cut flowers for the vase. Cheerful and easygoing, it brings warm colour to sunny borders from late spring through early autumn.
Choose a spot in full sun (more than six hours of direct light daily); it accepts partial shade but flowers far less. The seeds need light to germinate, so press them onto the surface or barely cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep evenly moist; sprouts appear in roughly 8-14 days at a soil temperature near 20-22°C. In Egypt, sow in autumn (late September to November) or late winter to early spring (February to March), avoiding the deep heat of June-August. Space plants about 30-45 cm apart for good airflow.
Rudbeckia is a light feeder. On most soils a spring mulch of well-rotted organic matter is enough; sandy soils benefit from a handful of general-purpose fertilizer per square metre in spring. Where feeding is preferred, apply a 12-6-6 slow-release feed at roughly 0.45 kg per 9.3 m² when new leaves emerge, then half that rate in autumn.
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy during growth; once established the plant tolerates heat and drought well. Use drip irrigation and avoid overhead watering to limit foliar disease. Deadhead spent flowers to extend and increase blooming. It is largely pest-resistant; watch for aphids or spider mites (treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap) and powdery mildew, which good spacing and airflow help prevent.
