This mixed-species cactus pack is a surprise collection in a single sowing: a blend of ornamental Cactaceae that grows into plants of different shapes, ribs, spines and forms. Slow-growing and drought-loving, these sculptural houseplants thrive on neglect, store water in their fleshy stems, and reward a sunny windowsill with architectural character that no two seedlings quite share.
Sow in spring into pots or small trays of free-draining compost (peat-free John Innes No 1 with added grit or sharp sand). Do not bury the seed: surface-sow small seeds uncovered and only cover large seeds with a thin layer of grit; mix tiny seeds with a little sand for even spread. Keep at about 21C in a bright spot out of direct sun, cover with glass or a clear plastic bag to hold humidity, and ventilate daily to wipe off condensation. Keep the compost moist but never soggy.
Feed only in the growing season, roughly April to September. Apply a high-potassium liquid feed such as a tomato fertiliser, or a houseplant food higher in phosphorus than nitrogen, diluted to one-half to one-quarter of the label rate every few waterings. Never fertilise in winter.
Give established cacti bright light year-round, ideally 10 hours and at least 6 to 8. Water thoroughly once the surface dries, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings, and give little or no water during the winter rest. Pot on seedlings only once big enough to handle (up to about 12 months), using a snug container. Watch for mealybugs, red spider mites and scale, and prevent rot with good drainage.
