This imported mixed cactus seed pack brings together several ornamental species from the family Cactaceae, so a single pot can grow into a varied collection of sculptural, slow-growing succulents with different shapes, ribbing and spine patterns. Tough and architectural rather than leafy, these cacti are prized as long-lived houseplants that thrive on a sunny windowsill and ask for very little water, making them a striking, low-effort display for Egyptian homes.
Sow in spring into pots or small trays of free-draining compost (peat-free John Innes No 1 with added grit or sharp sand). Do not bury the seeds: surface-sow small ones and cover only large seeds with a thin layer of grit. Mix tiny seeds with a little sand for even spread. Keep at about 21C in a bright spot out of direct sun, cover with glass or a clear plastic bag to hold humidity, and ventilate daily to wipe off condensation; keep the compost moist but not soggy.
Feed only in the growing season (about April to September). Use a high-potassium liquid feed such as tomato fertiliser, or a houseplant food higher in phosphorus than nitrogen, diluted to half or a quarter of the label rate every 3-4 waterings. Do not fertilize in winter.
Give bright light year-round, ideally 10+ hours (minimum 6-8). Water thoroughly once the surface feels dry, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings, then rest with little or no water in winter (about November to March). Aim for 13-24C. Pot on seedlings only when big enough to handle (up to about 12 months from sowing), into a snug pot. Watch for mealybugs, red spider mites and scale, and prevent rot with good drainage.
