This mixed cactus seed pack brings together several species of family Cactaceae in one sowing, so a single tray rewards you with a varied collection of small, sculptural spiny plants. Their globe-shaped and columnar forms, ribbed textures and contrasting spine patterns make them prized ornamentals for sunny windowsills, desk pots and easy-care indoor displays that ask very little once established.
Sow in spring into pots or small trays of free-draining compost (peat-free John Innes No 1 with added grit or sharp sand). Do not bury the seeds: surface-sow small seeds uncovered and only top large seeds with a thin layer of grit, mixing tiny seeds with a little sand for even spread. Keep at about 21C in a bright spot out of direct sun, cover with glass or a clear plastic bag to hold humidity, and ventilate daily to wipe off condensation. Keep the compost moist but never overly wet.
Feed only in the growing season, roughly April to September. Apply a high-potassium liquid feed such as tomato fertiliser or a specialist cactus feed about once a month, or a food higher in phosphorus than nitrogen diluted to half strength. Apply at only one-half to one-quarter of the label rate every 3-4 waterings, and never fertilize in winter.
Give established cacti bright light year-round, ideally 10+ hours and at least 6-8 hours daily. Water thoroughly once the surface feels dry, letting the soil dry out fully between waterings, with minimal water during the winter rest (about November-March). Keep plants around 13-24C. Pot on seedlings only when big enough to handle, which can take up to about 12 months, into a pot just big enough for the roots. Watch for mealybugs, red spider mites and scale; bright light and careful watering with good drainage prevent rot.
