The Blanket Flower earns its name from the warm, woven bands of crimson, orange and gold that ring each daisy-like bloom, often tipped in bright yellow. These cheerful, long-stemmed flowers float above tidy mounds of greyish-green foliage and bring a fiery, prairie-style glow to borders, gravel gardens and cut-flower beds. Tough, sun-loving and endlessly generous, Gaillardia is a magnet for bees and butterflies and one of the easiest annuals to grow from seed.

Planting

Surface-sow the seed and do not bury it, as light is needed for germination; at most press it gently into the surface or barely cover. Keep the surface consistently moist; seedlings emerge in about 7 to 20 days at a soil temperature near 21°C (ideally 20 to 24°C). In Egypt, treat it as a winter annual: sow in autumn, roughly late September to November, so plants establish through the mild winter and bloom from late winter into spring. Sow directly outdoors or start indoors 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Thin or transplant seedlings to stand about 15 to 30 cm apart.

Fertilizing

Gaillardia is a light feeder and needs little fertiliser. Feed just once as flowering begins, then top-dress with well-rotted manure once during summer. Avoid over-feeding, especially high-nitrogen products, which is unnecessary and works against good flowering.

Care

Give it full sun, six or more hours of direct light daily, with only light partial shade tolerated. It prefers dry-to-medium moisture and excellent drainage, becoming drought-tolerant once established; water during dry spells but keep foliage dry and water in early morning to avoid root rot. In hotter Upper Egypt, add afternoon shade and steadier moisture. Watch for aphids, thrips and leafminers, and for powdery mildew in damp conditions. Plants grow about 30 to 45 cm tall and 15 to 30 cm wide. Deadheading prolongs the long bloom season; left alone, plants self-sow for next year.
