Celosia Seeds

Celosia argentea var. cristata, the true crested cockscomb, is instantly recognisable for its dense, velvety flower head that folds into wavy ridges resembling a rooster's comb or brain coral. Egyptian seed shops sell it as 'عرف الديك', a warm-season annual in the Amaranthaceae family. The crests glow in jewel tones of fiery red, magenta, orange and gold, holding their colour for weeks in the garden and drying beautifully, which makes them a favourite for fresh and everlasting arrangements as well as bold borders and patio pots.

Planting

Start seed indoors in plug or cell trays about 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost, then transplant once all danger of frost has passed. Light triggers germination, so press the seed onto the surface and cover only with a thin 0.5 cm layer. At a media temperature of 21-27 C, seedlings emerge in roughly 8 to 14 days. Space plants about 15-30 cm apart and grow in full sun with 8+ hours of direct light; in fierce heat, light afternoon shade eases stress.

Fertilizing

Plant into well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter at pH 6.0-7.0, mixing in a balanced fertiliser with roughly equal nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Once established, feed monthly with a blend higher in phosphorus than nitrogen to keep new crests forming.

Care

Keep soil evenly moist but never soggy, watering only when the top 2.5-5 cm feels dry, as overwatering invites root rot. When plants reach 15-30 cm, pinch the growing tip to boost branching. Watch for aphids and thrips; deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering. Plants mature in about 90 to 120 days, flowering from spring into late summer.
