Statice (Limonium sinuatum) is a heat-loving Mediterranean favourite grown for its papery, funnel-shaped flowers that bloom in summer atop winged stems. Reaching about 30-46 cm tall and 23-30 cm wide, it is the classic everlasting flower: its bright, long-lasting blooms hold full colour even after drying, making it a star of both fresh-cut bouquets and lasting dried arrangements.
Choose a full-sun spot with 6 or more hours of direct light and very well-drained, sandy loam soil worked to about 20 cm deep, adding grit or perlite for drainage; it tolerates a pH of roughly 5.5 to 8.0. Sow seed shallowly, about 5 mm deep when direct-sown, or barely cover at about 3 mm indoors, since light aids germination. Seeds sprout in about 21-30 days at a soil temperature of 18-21 C. Space plants about 40-45 cm apart.
Feed with a balanced all-purpose fertilizer every 6 weeks, or work a slow-release feed into the soil in spring. After transplanting you can apply light nitrogen, such as calcium nitrate, every two weeks starting 3-4 weeks later.
Statice is drought-tolerant once established, so keep soil just moist during germination and avoid overwatering, using drip rather than overhead irrigation to prevent crown and root rot. Good spacing and air circulation guard against disease. For drying, cut stems when flowers are about three-quarters open and hang them upside down in a cool, dry, airy place.
