This annual Drummond's phlox forms a low, bushy cushion smothered in clusters of small star-shaped flowers, each with a softly notched petal edge and a clear central eye. The mix opens in a cheerful spread of jewel tones, giving a long, carpet-like display that is ideal for edging beds and borders, filling pots and window boxes, or massing as a colourful groundcover. Reaching only about 0.1-0.5 m in height and spread, it is a tidy, free-flowering choice for the cool Egyptian winter garden.
Sow seed roughly 3 mm deep and cover it well, as this phlox needs darkness to germinate. Keep the soil at about 16-18C and seedlings appear in around 5-10 days. In Egypt grow it as a cool-season flower: direct-sow in the open garden from early-to-mid October, or sow in trays in early October and transplant in late October to early November. Since phlox dislikes root disturbance, direct sowing is often best. Space plants about 20-30 cm apart in full sun (it tolerates light shade) in fertile, moist, well-drained soil.
Feed with a balanced fertilizer that is not too high in nitrogen, favouring potassium, so the plant makes flowers rather than excess leaf. Apply a balanced slow-release feed at the start of the growing season, then supplement with a liquid feed while the plants are in bloom.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, watering at the base and avoiding wet foliage to limit fungal disease. Good air circulation and adequate spacing reduce powdery mildew and leaf spot. Watch for spider mites, which cause fine yellow stippling; treat early with insecticidal soap. Flowering runs through the warm season, roughly early December to April, and regular deadheading keeps blooms coming. In hotter Upper Egypt give light afternoon shade and regular irrigation.
