Rudbeckia hirta, the Black-eyed Susan (also sold as Gloriosa Daisy or Coneflower), is one of the most rewarding ornamental daisies you can grow. Its warm golden-yellow petals radiate around a dark chocolate-brown central cone, lighting up borders, beds, and pollinator gardens from late spring into early autumn. The sturdy, long-stemmed blooms are excellent for cutting and last well in the vase, bringing a cheerful country-garden feel wherever they are planted.
Choose a spot in full sun with more than 6 hours of direct light daily; it tolerates partial shade but flowers far less. The seeds need light to germinate, so press them into the surface or cover with only a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil evenly moist; germination takes about 8 to 14 days at a soil temperature near 20-22°C. In Egypt, sow in autumn (late September to November) across the Delta and Lower Egypt, or in late winter to early spring (February to March). You can also start seeds indoors 5 to 7 weeks before planting out, bottom-watering to avoid burying the light-sensitive seeds, then transplant after frost danger passes. Space plants 30-45 cm apart for good airflow.
Rudbeckia is a light feeder. Apply a 12-6-6 slow-release fertilizer at about 0.45 kg per 9.3 m² in early-to-mid spring as new leaves emerge, with a half-rate feeding (about 0.23 kg per 9.3 m²) in autumn. On most soils a spring mulch of well-rotted organic matter is enough; sandy soils benefit from a general-purpose fertilizer in spring.
Keep the soil slightly moist (never soggy) through the growing season; once established the plant is heat and drought tolerant. Use drip irrigation and avoid overhead watering to limit foliar disease. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming. It is generally pest-resistant, though aphids, caterpillars, or spider mites may appear; powdery mildew is the most common disease and is rarely fatal. Good spacing, drip irrigation, and removing dead foliage keep plants healthy. In Egypt's mild winters it can overwinter as a short-lived perennial.
