Common Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) is the go-to warm-season turfgrass for a tough, carpet-like lawn. This is the seeded ornamental lawn type, a perennial creeper that knits together by rhizomes, stolons and seed into a fine-textured, deep-green, low turf rather than a cut flower. It loves heat, shrugs off foot traffic, and stays green and resilient through the hottest months, making it a favourite for sunny gardens, play areas and verges.
Choose a full-sun spot with 6 or more hours of direct sunlight; it struggles in shade. Sow into a firm, well-prepared seedbed and rake the seed into only the top 0.3 cm of soil, since seeding too deep can stop germination. Sow in late spring to early summer once the soil is warm and frost has passed. Germination starts near 20 C and is best between 25 and 40 C, with sprouting in about 7-10 days and seedlings emerging around 14 days. It tolerates pH from 5.0 to 8.5, preferring 5.8-6.5, and can reach roughly 95% cover by 45 days.
Hold off on feeding until full spring green-up. Through the season apply nitrogen at about 0.25-0.5 kg per 100 square metres per application, split across early, mid and late summer for a total of roughly 1-2 kg per 100 square metres. Use the lower rate on clay soils and the higher rate on sandy soils, and avoid nitrogen in early autumn as it encourages large patch disease.
Water deeply but rarely, giving about 2-2.5 cm only when the lawn shows drought stress, and ease off through dormancy in cold months. Mow often at 2.5-5 cm, never cutting more than a third of the blade at once. Manage water and autumn feeding to limit spring dead spot, large patch and dollar spot, and control crabgrass, goosegrass and sedges before and after sowing.
