The Strawflower, or Golden Everlasting (Helichrysum / Xerochrysum bracteatum), is prized above ordinary daisies for one remarkable trait: its papery, straw-like petals feel almost crisp to the touch and hold their bright, jewel-toned colour indefinitely once dried. Native to Australia, this sun-loving annual produces an endless flush of vivid blooms that are the classic choice for everlasting cut and dried bouquets, wreaths, and crafts. Easy and undemanding, it rewards a sunny, dry corner with weeks of cheerful colour.
Seeds need light to sprout, so press them onto the surface and leave them uncovered, or barely dust with fine soil; outdoor drills run about 1 cm deep. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or direct-sow in mid to late spring on warm soil. In Egypt's frost-free Delta and coast, sow in autumn (October–November) for late-winter to spring bloom; a January–February sowing also works. Keep the surface moist; germination takes 7–10 days at roughly 21–24 °C. Space plants 23–30 cm apart (15–25 cm for compact types) for good airflow.
This is a light feeder that needs little in fair soil. Work a few centimetres of compost into the bed before planting. If feeding, apply a light dose of balanced fertilizer early in the season, or top up with compost tea. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which pushes leaves at the expense of flowers.
Give it full sun (6+ hours daily) and sharp drainage. Keep young plants evenly moist, then water sparingly once established, since mature plants are drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering, the main cause of downy mildew. Stake tall types. Harvest for drying when buds are just half-open, then hang upside down in a warm, airy, shaded spot for about three weeks.
