Gomphrena Flowers, or Globe Amaranth, bring rounded clover-shaped blooms with a distinctive dry, papery feel that holds its bright colour for weeks. The tidy, ball-like heads sit on upright stems above neat foliage, making them a favourite for summer borders, pollinator beds, and especially everlasting bouquets that keep their shape long after drying.
This frost-tender, warm-season annual needs warmth to start. Sow seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost, surface-sowing and covering lightly with about 3 mm of fine media. Soaking seed overnight speeds things along. Germination takes about 5-14 days at a steady 21-26 C. Harden off seedlings and transplant out only after frost has passed and soil is reliably warm, around 21 C. Space plants about 15-30 cm apart, or closer at 15-20 cm for cutting. Choose full sun, with at least 6-8 hours of direct light daily.
Globe Amaranth is a light feeder needing little or no extra fertiliser. Work compost into the bed at planting; on poor soil, one light application of a balanced slow-release granular feed at planting is plenty. Avoid over-feeding, which pushes leafy growth and fewer flowers.
Keep evenly moist while establishing, then ease off, as it is notably heat- and drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering and overhead watering to prevent fungal disease. Pinch the first flowers to encourage bushier plants. Plants bloom from summer until frost, roughly 12-16 weeks from sowing; cut blooms when coloured but not fully open for fresh use, or fully open for drying.
