French marigold (Tagetes patula) is the compact, bushy member of the marigold family, prized for its mounded habit and an abundance of small, richly coloured flowers in warm gold, orange, bronze and deep mahogany red — often beautifully bicoloured. Unlike the tall African types, this variety stays low and tidy, making it a favourite for edging beds and borders, filling containers, and tucking between vegetables in the kitchen garden, where its bright blooms and pungent foliage earn it a long-loved place. It flowers quickly and over a long season, rewarding very little effort with a dense carpet of colour.

Planting

Sow French marigolds directly outdoors once the soil has warmed to about 18 C, or start them indoors 4-6 weeks before you plan to set them out, transplanting only after all frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed. French types are flexible and can be sown from spring through midsummer. Set the seed about 6 mm deep and cover it lightly, making sure it is fully covered by the growing media. At 21-24 C the seed germinates in roughly 5-8 days, and gentle bottom heat speeds things along. Space French marigolds 20-25 cm apart, give them a spot in full sun with 6 or more hours of direct light, and aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Pinching the young plants encourages bushier branching.

Fertilizing

Marigolds are light feeders, so keep it simple. Work a balanced general-purpose fertilizer with equal nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium — or a slow-release feed formulated for annuals — into the soil at planting time only. After that, no additional feeding is usually needed. Steer clear of nitrogen-rich fertilizers: too much nitrogen pushes lush leafy growth at the expense of flowers. If you want to encourage more blooms, choose a balanced formula or one with a higher middle number (phosphorus).

Care

For the first couple of weeks after planting, keep the soil evenly moist. Once established, French marigolds are drought-tolerant and need only about 25 mm of water per week, with the soil allowed to dry somewhat between waterings — avoid overwatering. Always water at the base rather than overhead to help prevent disease. Plants typically begin to flower about 8 weeks (roughly 45-70 days) from seed and bloom from summer into autumn. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong flowering, prevent seed set and reduce disease in humid conditions. Watch for common pests such as spider mites, aphids, slugs, leafminers, whiteflies, thrips and caterpillars; insecticidal soap controls mites and aphids, while good drainage and base-only watering help fend off powdery mildew and gray mold.

Growing in Egypt

Marigolds are warm-season, frost-tender annuals that need full sun and germinate at 21-27 C, blooming roughly 8 weeks from sowing. Egypt's climate inverts the temperate calendar, so the cool season is the prime growing time. For the main season, sow from late August through October for blooms from autumn through the mild winter and into spring — Egypt's mild winters rarely frost in the Delta, so marigolds flower beautifully when temperate gardens cannot. You can also sow in January-February, especially in the warmer south, for a spring display before peak heat. Avoid sowing for June-August bloom: summer heat above 38 C and intense sun cause heat-stall, poor flowering and bud rot. In the more humid Delta and coast, space plants for airflow, water at the base and deadhead diligently to limit gray mold and powdery mildew; in the hotter, drier south, winter culture is excellent and low-disease, so sow earlier (December-January) and keep irrigation steady. Direct-sowing works well in Egypt's warm soils, while transplants started 4-6 weeks ahead give a faster, more uniform winter display.
