Red Salvia (Salvia splendens) is a showy bedding annual celebrated for its dense, upright spikes of vivid scarlet flowers that glow against deep green leaves. As a frost-tender warm-season plant that flowers best in cool weather, it is a star performer in Egyptian borders, beds and containers through the mild winter, drawing the eye and attracting bees and butterflies. Compact dwarf cultivars stay around 30-40 cm, while the species ranges roughly 20-75 cm tall.
Start seed indoors about 6-9 weeks before planting out. Salvia seeds need light to germinate, so surface-sow them onto a moist mix and leave them exposed or barely covered. Keep warm at about 21-24 C with bright, indirect light; germination takes roughly 7-15 days. In Egypt, sow July-September and raise seedlings under 30-50% shade to beat summer heat, then transplant to beds in September-October so plants establish and flower through the cool November-February period. Choose a full-sun spot (8+ hours daily) with well-drained soil at pH 6-7, spacing plants about 25-30 cm apart.
Mix a slow-release fertilizer for annuals into the soil at planting, or use a balanced general-purpose NPK feed. Optional monthly applications at half strength through summer increase the bloom count. For container plants, feed once a month during the growing season with a potassium-rich liquid feed such as a tomato fertiliser.
Move seedlings out only after all frost danger passes and the soil is warm, and protect from rare cold snaps below about 5 C. Water when the top 5 cm of soil is dry; the plant is fairly drought tolerant and dislikes constantly wet soil. Pinch out shoot tips when young for bushy growth, and clip off faded flower spikes to keep new blooms coming. Watch for damping-off, stem and root rots, powdery mildew, Botrytis, aphids, spider mites and whiteflies; wider spacing and good airflow reduce mildew.
