Gypsophila Flowers (Gypsophila elegans), the annual form of Baby's Breath, are a delicate filler flower from the carnation family. Their tiny blooms gather into airy sprays that look like a soft cloud, available in pure white and gentle pink. Prized by florists, they are the classic companion that lightens cut bouquets and dries beautifully for lasting arrangements.
This flower resents transplanting, so direct-seed it where it is to bloom. Sow shallowly, barely covering the small seeds (about 3 mm), as they need a little light to start. Treat it as a cool-season crop in Egypt: in the Delta and Lower Egypt sow October to December, while Upper Egypt is best sown November to December. Germination is best at 21-22 C, with seedlings emerging in roughly 7-14 days. Thin plants to about 15-20 cm apart for good airflow. Choose a full-sun spot with light, well-drained, neutral-to-alkaline soil.
Gypsophila thrives in lean, poor soil, so heavy feeding is rarely needed. Rich ground and high-nitrogen feeds only drive soft, floppy growth that storms flatten. If you feed at all, use a light, low-nitrogen mix favouring phosphorus, applied in spring during active growth.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, watering regularly while plants establish; once settled it tolerates some dryness. Good drainage and spacing prevent stem rot, its main weakness. For a steady supply of stems, succession-sow every 2-4 weeks through the cool months, and cut sprays when 70-90% of their flowers are open. Cutting back after bloom can bring a second flush.
