Rudbeckia hirta, the cheerful Black-Eyed Susan (also sold as Gloriosa Daisy), brings warm golden-yellow petals radiating around a dark chocolate-brown central cone. These daisy-like blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, light up sunny borders and beds, and last beautifully as cut flowers in a vase. In Egypt's mild Mediterranean-type climate it can behave as a short-lived perennial rather than dying back, rewarding you with colour from late spring through early autumn.

Planting

Choose a spot in full sun with more than 6 hours of direct light daily; partial shade is tolerated but gives noticeably fewer flowers. The seeds need light to germinate, so press them onto the surface or cover with only a thin layer of soil (about 0.6-1.3 cm) and keep it moist. Germination takes roughly 8-14 days at a soil temperature of around 20-22°C. In Egypt, sow in autumn (late September to November) across the Delta and Lower Egypt, or in late winter to early spring (February to March). Space plants about 30-45 cm apart for good airflow. To start indoors, sow about 5-7 weeks before planting out and bottom-water to avoid burying the seeds.

Fertilizing

Rudbeckia is a light feeder. You can apply a 12-6-6 slow-release fertilizer in early-to-mid spring as new leaves emerge, with a lighter second feed in autumn. On most soils a spring mulch of well-rotted organic matter is enough; sandy soils benefit from a handful of general-purpose fertilizer per square metre in spring.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy during growth; once established the plant tolerates heat and drought well. Use drip irrigation and avoid overhead watering to limit foliar disease. Good spacing and removing dead foliage help prevent powdery mildew. Generally pest-resistant, but watch for aphids or spider mites (treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap) and caterpillars (Bt). Deadhead spent flowers to prolong and increase blooming.
