CUF 101 is a celebrated berseem clover (Trifolium alexandrinum) selection prized for its dense, leafy stems and exceptionally high-protein forage. This Pacific Seed Company Resistor line stays productive where heat and dry spells would stall lesser clovers, producing the round white to yellowish-white flower heads typical of the species. It is the backbone of Egypt's winter fodder, beloved by livestock and highly attractive to honeybees.
Sow shallow: broadcast or drill no deeper than 10 mm, around 6 mm being ideal, since this small seed emerges poorly when buried. Roll the soil before and after sowing for firm seed-to-soil contact. Sow into warm soil at a steady minimum near 7 degrees C; germination is quick, about 7 days with good moisture. In the Delta, sow from late September into October; favour the multi-cut Miscawi landrace. Upper Egypt suits later October to November sowing with Fahl or Saidi types.
Inoculate seed with Rhizobium trifolii so plants fix their own nitrogen, up to 110 to 220 kg N per hectare. Avoid nitrogen fertilizer, which suppresses nodulation. The crop responds to high phosphorus and potassium; boron helps on sandy soils. Keep pH above 6.0, ideally 6.5 to 7.5, and lime acidic ground.
Berseem needs full sun and steady moisture; under irrigated production 10 to 15 irrigations per season are typical. Take the first cut about 50 to 60 days after planting, then every 30 to 40 days, leaving stubble and allowing regrowth from roughly 6 cm. Watch for stem rot, root rot, aphids and mites. It is frost-tender, killed by hard frost below about -4 degrees C.
