Bergamot (Monarda didyma), also known as bee balm, is a herbaceous perennial of the mint family prized for its dense, head-like clusters of slender, two-lipped tubular flowers in glowing red, pink and purple. The blooms, about 3-4 cm long, sit above aromatic foliage whose minty-citrus leaves can be steeped into a fragrant herbal tea. It is a true pollinator magnet for bees and butterflies, making it a standout in sunny ornamental beds and cottage borders.

Planting

For more reliable results, cold-stratify the seed first: keep it in a moist medium such as damp sand inside a sealed bag in the refrigerator for at least about a month. Bee balm is a light germinator, so surface-sow by pressing seed onto the soil and leaving it uncovered. Germinate at roughly 20-22 C, with seedlings appearing in about 10-21 days. Start transplants around 7-9 weeks before planting out, then harden off and space plants 30-45 cm apart, or 60-90 cm for the best airflow. Choose a full-sun spot of 6+ hours, with afternoon shade in very hot areas.

Fertilizing

Bergamot is a light feeder. Each spring, top the bed with about 1.3 cm of compost, or apply a single dose of a balanced granular fertilizer such as 10-10-10 in spring or midsummer. Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which drives leafy growth at the expense of flowers and raises disease risk.

Care

Keep the soil moist but well-drained, never letting it dry out in summer, and water at the base to keep foliage dry. Powdery mildew is the main threat, so favour wide spacing and good air circulation. Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering, cut stems to the ground in autumn, and lift and divide clumps every three years to keep plants vigorous.
