Gypsophila elegans, the annual Baby's Breath, is the airy filler flower that florists reach for to give bouquets their soft, cloud-like volume. Belonging to the carnation family, it scatters countless tiny five-petalled blooms in clean white and gentle pink across slender, branching stems. Delicate yet long-lasting, it is prized for both fresh cut arrangements and dried displays, weaving lightness around showier flowers.
This annual resents transplanting, so direct-seed it where it is to flower. Sow the small seeds shallowly, barely covering them with about 3 mm of soil, since they benefit from some light. Choose a spot in full sun with deep, light, well-drained, neutral-to-alkaline soil; avoid acidic ground and winter wet. In Egypt, sow as a cool-season crop: across the Delta and Lower Egypt (Cairo, Alexandria) sow October to December, while Upper Egypt does best with a November to December sowing. Keep soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge in roughly 7 to 14 days at around 21-22 C, then thin plants to about 15-20 cm apart for good air circulation.
Gypsophila thrives on lean soil, so keep feeding light. Rich ground and high-nitrogen feeds only produce soft, floppy growth that rain beats down at the expense of flowers. If you feed at all, apply a light, balanced or low-nitrogen mix in spring during active growth; otherwise heavy fertilizing is unnecessary.
Water regularly while plants establish, keeping soil consistently moist but never waterlogged; once settled it is fairly drought-tolerant. Good drainage and spacing guard against stem rot, the main issue for this otherwise pest-free flower. Cut sprays for the vase when 70-90% of their blooms are open, and trim back after flowering to coax a second flush. Sow successionally every 2 to 4 weeks through the cool months for a steady supply.
