Hollyhock (Malva, Alcea rosea) is one of the most striking erect herbaceous flowering plants you can grow from seed. Its tall spikes climb well above 1 m and carry large, funnel-shaped blooms in dense, multicoloured clusters — a timeless ornamental choice for back borders, fences and cottage-style beds where you want height and old-world charm.
In Egypt, autumn (September–October) is the ideal sowing window; the milder soil and air temperatures of roughly 18–28°C sit right in the germination range and let plants build a leaf rosette through the gentle winter. Sow on the surface or barely cover at about 6 mm, since the large seeds need light to germinate. Soaking the tough-coated seeds in warm water beforehand lifts the germination rate. Choose full sun (6+ hours daily) and fertile, well-drained soil, sheltered from strong winds. At 16–21°C seedlings usually emerge in about 10–14 days. Space plants around 60 cm apart for airflow.
In good fertile soil, no extra feeding is essential. Work well-rotted compost into the bed before planting, as the plant favours loams rich in organic matter, then spread a roughly 10 cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost after planting to enrich the soil.
Keep seedlings and young plants consistently moist, with the top 15 cm damp but never waterlogged; established plants need watering mainly in long dry spells. Always water at the base, never over the leaves. In windy spots, set a bamboo cane beside each stem and tie it in as it grows. Guard against hollyhock rust with wide spacing, base watering, prompt removal of infected leaves and a full autumn clean-up. Flowering runs from early summer into autumn.
