Calendula Gold is a classic strain of Pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis) prized for its warm, glowing orange-gold petals arranged in generous daisy-like flowers about 5-6 cm across. The edible blooms add colour and a gentle, slightly peppery note to salads, while the plant's tidy, bushy habit makes it a favourite for borders, containers, and cut-flower vases. Cheerful and dependable, it earns its place in any ornamental or kitchen garden.

Planting

In Egypt, sow as a cool-season annual from autumn (roughly late September into November) so plants establish in the mild winter and flower from winter into spring. An early-spring sowing in February to March is possible but gives a shorter bloom window. Avoid the hot summer, when high heat ruins germination. Sow seeds shallowly, about 5 mm deep and lightly covered, once soil has warmed to around 16 C. Seedlings emerge in roughly 7 to 15 days. Thin or space plants about 15 to 40 cm apart for good airflow. Grow in full sun in most ordinary, free-draining soil; in hotter Upper Egypt offer light afternoon shade.

Fertilizing

Calendula is a light feeder, so feeding is optional and often unnecessary in decent soil. If you choose to feed, apply a balanced all-purpose organic fertilizer such as 5-5-5 or 10-10-10 at planting or during early growth. Avoid heavy or repeated nitrogen, which encourages lush leaves at the expense of flowers and invites aphids. Overly rich soil has the same effect, so keep things modest.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist and water consistently, but water at the base rather than overhead, since wet foliage encourages powdery and downy mildew. Good spacing, airflow, and free drainage help prevent fungal problems such as leaf spot, gray mould, and root rots. Watch for aphids and whiteflies, plus slugs on seedlings; rinse pests off with a strong water spray or use insecticidal soap. Pinch back young plants for bushier growth, and deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Cut blooms last longer if picked half-open.
