Scarlet Flax, known in Arabic as 'كتان الزهور' or red flax, is one of the simplest and most rewarding ornamentals you can raise from seed. This easy, fast-growing annual in the flax family carries saucer-shaped flowers about 4 cm wide, each one a glowing rose-pink to scarlet bloom with a striking dark centre. On a slender plant of roughly 10-50 cm, the flowers shimmer in the breeze and make a luminous splash in beds, borders, and naturalistic drifts. Each flower lasts about a day but is quickly replaced, so the display stays fresh for weeks.
Direct-sow in place after the last frost, as flax dislikes transplanting. In Egypt, sow in the cool season: the Delta and Lower Egypt from October-November for late-winter to spring bloom, and Upper Egypt earlier, around October. Cover seed only lightly, about 5 mm deep, since light aids germination. Choose full sun and light, free-draining loam or sandy soil. Seeds sprout in roughly 20-25 days, sometimes faster in warmth.
Keep it lean. Avoid added fertilizer and manure, because rich soil cuts down on flowering. Light, moderately fertile, well-drained ground gives the best blooms, so no routine feeding is needed through the season.
Keep soil consistently moist while seedlings establish, then water less as the plant becomes drought-tolerant. Thin seedlings to about 15 cm apart, and sow more seed where you want extra plants rather than moving them. For longer flowering from late spring into autumn, cut back about half of the flowering stems by half in early-to-mid summer. Watch for occasional slugs, snails, and aphids. Leave a few seed heads and the plant readily self-seeds.
