The MAGSEEDS Snake Melon F1 hybrid is a refined strain of قثاء (faqous), botanically Cucumis melo var. flexuosus — a melon grown like a cucumber. Its long, slender, ribbed fruit has thin skin and crisp, juicy flesh with a clean, mild, faintly sweet melon-like flavour and no bitterness, making it perfect for fresh salads, pickling, or slicing chilled. The vigorous, climbing vine is genuinely heat-tolerant, thriving in hot, dry conditions far better than common cucumber, which makes it a natural fit for Egyptian summers.

Planting

Choose a spot in full sun with at least 6-8 hours of direct light. Wait until the soil has warmed to around 21 C, then sow seeds about 1-2 cm deep in well-prepared ground. With warm soil of about 15-30 C (ideally 18-24 C), seedlings emerge in roughly 7-14 days. Space plants about 23 cm apart in rows around 90 cm apart, or 30-50 cm apart on wide ridges; train the vine up a trellis or fence for straighter fruit, or let it sprawl.

Fertilizing

This is a heavy feeder. At sowing or transplanting, mix a complete organic fertilizer into the soil beneath each plant, and a slow-release feed improves yields. In the field, begin nitrogen about 20-25 days after planting, split over three irrigations, adding potassium and magnesium, with two foliar applications of iron, zinc, and manganese during the season.

Care

Keep the soil evenly and consistently moist all season, watering the soil rather than the leaves to keep foliage dry and reduce disease. If started indoors, transplant at the third true leaf; if direct-seeded, thin to the strongest seedling. Watch for aphids, cutworms, thrips, and cucumber beetles, plus powdery mildew and fungal rots in humidity. First fruit comes about two months from sowing — pick young at 30-35 cm for the best flavour, and harvest regularly to keep the plant productive.
