The French marigold (Tagetes patula) is the compact, fast-flowering favourite of the marigold family, prized for its neat bushy habit and densely petalled blooms in warm shades of gold, orange, mahogany and bicolour. Unlike the towering African types that mature slowly, this French variety stays low and tidy, branches freely, and bursts into colour quickly, making it the go-to choice for borders, edging, container displays and as a cheerful companion plant. These imported seeds give you a reliable, sun-loving display that flowers for months on end.
French marigolds are warm-season, frost-tender annuals that love full sun, so choose a spot with six or more hours of direct sunlight daily; they perform poorly in shade but shrug off very hot summers. In Egypt the calendar is inverted compared with temperate gardens: sow in the main season from late August through October for blooms across autumn and the mild winter into spring, or sow in January and February (especially in the warmer south) for a spring display before the peak heat. Avoid sowing for a June-to-August bloom, since high temperatures stall growth and reduce flowering. Sow the seeds about 6 mm deep and cover them lightly, making sure each seed is fully covered by the growing media. Direct-sowing works well in Egypt's warm soils, or you can start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before planting out for a faster, more uniform display; pinching young plants encourages branching. Seeds germinate in about 5 to 8 days at 21 to 24 C, and bottom heat speeds things up. Space French marigolds 20 to 25 cm apart in soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5.
Marigolds are light feeders, so go easy. Work a balanced general-purpose fertilizer with equal nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, or a slow-release feed formulated for annuals, into the soil at planting time only. As a rule no extra feeding is needed afterwards. Steer clear of nitrogen-rich fertilizers, because too much nitrogen pushes lush leafy growth at the expense of flowers; stick to balanced formulas or one with a higher middle number (phosphorus) to encourage more blooms.
Keep the soil evenly moist for the first couple of weeks after planting. Once established, plants need roughly 25 mm of water per week, letting the soil dry out somewhat between waterings, as marigolds are drought-tolerant once settled in. Avoid overwatering and water at the base rather than overhead to help prevent disease. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong the long blooming period, prevent seed set, and cut down on disease in humid conditions; plants typically begin flowering about 8 weeks (roughly 45 to 70 days) from seed and carry on from summer into autumn. Watch for spider mites, aphids, slugs, leafminers, whiteflies, thrips and caterpillars; treat mites and aphids with insecticidal soap. In the humid Delta, give plants room for airflow and water at the base to ward off gray mold and powdery mildew on the dense double flowers.
