Edging Lobelia (Lobelia erinus) is a low, mounding-to-trailing annual prized for its sheer abundance of tiny flowers. Each plant stays compact at roughly 0.1-0.5 m tall and wide, then disappears under a cloud of dainty blue, violet or purple blooms — many carrying a bright white or yellow eye, with white, pink and red forms also available. It flowers profusely over a long season, making it a favourite for edging, hanging baskets, window boxes and winter containers where its cascading habit and cool jewel tones really shine.

Planting

In Egypt grow Lobelia as a cool-season annual, not a spring crop. Sow into nursery trays or seedbeds in September-October, then transplant into beds or containers in October-November. The seed is extremely fine, so press it onto the surface and do not cover it — light is needed for germination, and mixing the seed with a little sand helps spread it evenly. Keep it at about 18-24 degrees C and seedlings emerge in roughly 14-21 days. Space plants about 10-15 cm apart (up to 20 cm for fuller beds) in full sun to partial shade.

Fertilizing

Lobelia feeds steadily through the growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer about every two weeks early on, then switch to a nitrogen-free feed roughly every two weeks later in the season. Alternatively, a balanced liquid feed every 2-3 weeks, or a slow-release granular at planting followed by periodic liquid feeding, keeps blooming generous.

Care

Provide reliably moist, well-drained soil — this plant does not tolerate drought, so water consistently without waterlogging, and avoid forceful overhead spraying that can wash out the fine seed. It is generally disease-free but watch for slugs and snails, and guard against damping-off and root rot in wet winters by keeping drainage sharp. In Upper Egypt, give afternoon or part shade as spring warms to extend bloom before the heat ends the season.
