Globe Amaranth (Gomphrena globosa) is loved for its perfectly round, clover-shaped flower heads in jewel tones of magenta, purple, pink, and white. The blooms have a dry, papery, almost everlasting feel, holding their bright colour for weeks on the plant and even longer once dried. This makes it a standout choice for sunny borders, pollinator gardens, and both fresh-cut and dried bouquets.
Start seed indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost, then transplant outdoors only once all frost danger has passed and the soil is consistently warm, around 21 C. Surface-sow and cover lightly with about 3 mm of fine media; soaking the seed overnight can speed things up. Germination takes roughly 5-14 days at 21-26 C. Space plants about 15-30 cm apart, choosing a spot with full sun for at least 6-8 hours daily.
This is a light feeder that needs little or no extra fertiliser. Mix compost into the bed at planting, and if the soil is poor, add a single light dose of balanced slow-release granular feed. Avoid over-fertilising, which pushes leafy growth instead of flowers.
Keep seedlings evenly moist while establishing, then ease off, as mature plants are notably heat- and drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering and overhead watering to keep fungal disease at bay. Pinch out the first flowers for bushier growth. It is largely trouble-free; blooms from summer until frost, in about 12-16 weeks from sowing.
