Bermuda grass "John P" is a seeded common Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) prized as a warm-season lawn turf rather than a cut flower. It forms a dense, fine, low green carpet that spreads vigorously by rhizomes, stolons and seed, knitting into a tough, even surface. Its deep-green colour, drought and heat tolerance, and ability to take foot traffic make it the classic choice for sunny Egyptian lawns, gardens and play areas.
Choose a spot in full sun with 6 or more hours of direct light; it performs poorly in shade. Prepare a firm, fine seedbed and adjust soil pH above 5.0 (5.8-6.5 is ideal). Broadcast the seed and rake lightly so it sits in only the top 0.3 cm of soil, never deeper. Sow from mid-March to June once the soil is warm and frost has passed; early autumn (September-October) also works. Germination begins around 20 °C, is fastest between 25-40 °C, and seedlings emerge in roughly 7-10 days, reaching near-full cover within about 45 days.
Do not feed until the lawn has fully greened up in spring. Through the growing season apply nitrogen at about 0.25-0.5 kg N per 100 m² per feed, split across early, mid and late summer, for a seasonal total of roughly 1-2 kg N per 100 m². Use the lower rate on clay soils and the higher rate on sandy soils, and avoid nitrogen in early autumn.
Water deeply but infrequently, applying about 2-2.5 cm only when the grass shows stress, and stop irrigation while dormant in winter. Mow regularly at 2.5-5 cm, removing no more than a third of the blade. Control crabgrass, goosegrass and sedges around sowing, and watch for large patch, dollar spot and pests such as mole crickets and armyworms.
