Vinca, the Madagascar Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus, often sold as the old name Vinca rosea), is the rare ornamental annual that actually thrives in scorching summer heat. Its glossy green foliage carries waves of flat, five-petalled flowers in clean white, soft pink, vivid rose, and deep red, each with a contrasting eye at the centre. Reaching about 15 to 60 cm tall depending on type, it makes a tidy, colourful filler for borders, pots, and balcony boxes that keep performing when other annuals fade.
Sow seed shallowly, covering it only about 3 mm deep, and keep the tray dark since the seed needs darkness to germinate. At 21-24 C germination takes roughly a week. Give it full sun, at least 6 hours daily, in a sheltered south- or east-facing spot, with moist but well-drained soil at pH 5.5-6.0. Plant out only once the soil is warm, above about 16 C, and nights stay above 16-18 C. Space upright types 30-45 cm apart, setting the root plug level with the surface.
Mix compost or a slow-release fertiliser into the soil at planting. Then feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid or water-soluble feed such as 10-10-10. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which encourages soft growth and invites disease.
Once established, vinca is highly drought-tolerant and prefers soil on the drier side. Let the top few centimetres dry between waterings and water in the morning so foliage dries by evening. Never use overhead irrigation, space plants for airflow, and ensure sharp drainage to prevent Phytophthora blight and root rot, the plant's main threats. Deadheading is not needed for continuous bloom.
