Celosia (Pheasant's Tail) Seeds for Home Gardening

Celosia, known in Egypt as 'عرف الديك', is a warm-season annual flower in the Amaranthaceae family. This crested 'cockscomb' form (Celosia argentea var. cristata) is prized for its velvety, densely folded flower combs that genuinely resemble a rooster's crest, glowing in fiery reds, oranges, pinks and golds. It thrives in heat, makes a bold statement in beds and containers, and the firm flower heads dry beautifully for long-lasting ornamental bouquets.

Planting

Sow indoors in plug or cell trays 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, then transplant out once all danger of frost has passed. Light aids germination, so cover the seed very lightly, around 0.5 cm, rather than burying it. Keep the media at about 21-27 C and seedlings emerge in roughly 8 to 14 days. Space transplants about 15-30 cm apart in full sun with 8+ hours of direct light, allowing light afternoon shade in very hot spells.

Fertilizing

At planting, work a balanced general-purpose fertilizer with roughly equal nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium into well-drained, organic-rich soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0. Once established, feed monthly with a fertilizer higher in phosphorus than nitrogen to encourage abundant new blooms.

Care

Water only when the top 2.5-5 cm of soil is dry, keeping it evenly moist but never waterlogged, since overwatering causes root rot. When plants reach 15-30 cm, pinch out the growing tip to boost branching. Watch for aphids and thrips. Harvest blooms once the heads are fully developed and the stem is firm, and deadhead spent flowers to keep new ones coming.
