Love-Lies-Bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus) is one of the most theatrical annuals you can grow, instantly recognised by its long, rope-like tassels that drape downward in rich crimson-to-gold tones. Reaching up to 0.9-1.5 m, it makes a dramatic backdrop in borders and an outstanding cut or dried flower, with the velvety plumes holding their colour beautifully indoors. Its warmth-loving nature makes it a natural fit for sunny Egyptian gardens.

Planting

This is a warm-season annual that resents cold. Direct-sow in mid-spring once frost danger has passed and the soil is warm, or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and transplant out afterwards. The seeds are tiny, so barely cover them at about 0.3 cm or press gently into the surface. Germination is best at 21-24 C, with seedlings emerging in roughly 7-10 days; soil below about 16 C gives unreliable results. Space plants around 30 cm apart, or up to 45-60 cm for large trailing forms. Give them full sun, 6+ hours daily, in a sheltered south- or west-facing spot.

Fertilizing

Feeding needs are low. In fertile, humus-rich soil little or no fertilizer is required; if you wish, apply a balanced all-purpose feed such as 10-10-10. Avoid high or synthetic nitrogen, which dulls the foliage colour and lets the leaves build up nitrates.

Care

Grow in moist, fertile, well-drained soil at pH 6-7, keeping it evenly moist for the richest colour. Once established it tolerates some drought, but poor soils need freer watering in dry summer spells. Stake tall trailing plants for support. Watch for aphids, and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Blooms run from summer into autumn, with first flowers about three months after sowing; harvest fresh stems when three-quarters of the florets are open.
