Amaranthus MIX (Love-Lies-Bleeding) is a showstopping warm-season annual prized for its long, rope-like tassels that cascade up to about 30 cm in a blend of shades from deep crimson and burgundy to glowing gold. The flowing, drooping plumes give borders a bold, theatrical look and make unforgettable fresh-cut and dried arrangements, with a vase life of roughly 7-10 days.
This frost-tender annual loves warmth. Direct-sow in situ in mid-spring once frost danger has passed and the soil is warm, or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost and transplant out afterwards. Sow only when soil reaches at least about 16 C. The seeds are tiny: barely cover them with about 0.3 cm of fine soil or press gently onto the surface. With an optimum of 21-24 C, seedlings emerge in about 7-10 days. Space ornamental plants around 30 cm apart, thinning larger trailing forms to 45-60 cm. Give full sun (6+ hours) in a sheltered, south- or west-facing spot.
Feeding needs are low. In fertile, humus-rich soil little or no fertilizer is required, though a balanced all-purpose feed such as 10-10-10 can be used. Avoid high or synthetic nitrogen, which dulls colour intensity and causes foliage to accumulate nitrates.
Keep soil evenly moist and well-drained (pH around 6-7) for the most vibrant colour; established plants tolerate some drought but poor soils need freer watering in dry spells. Tall trailing forms reaching 0.9-1.5 m may need staking. Watch for aphids, and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Blooms run summer into autumn; cut for vases when three-quarters of the florets are open.
