Sweet Pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is one of the most beloved fragrant climbers in the cutting garden, famous for its honey-sweet perfume and delicate, ruffled blooms shaped like little butterflies. The flowers come in a wide palette of soft pastels and deep jewel tones on long, slender stems, making them a timeless choice for fresh bouquets and trellised displays. A Mediterranean-native annual, it loves cool weather and rewards you with armfuls of scented blossoms before summer heat arrives.

Planting

In Egypt, sow directly in autumn, around mid-October into November, so plants build deep roots over the cool winter and bloom from late winter into early spring before the heat ends flowering. In the cooler, humid Delta you can sow a little later into November; in hotter Upper Egypt favour the earlier mid-October window. Soak the seeds for about 24 hours first to soften the hard coat, then cover with about 1 cm of soil, as darkness aids germination. Sprouts appear in roughly 14-21 days at a soil temperature of 13-18 C. Choose a full-sun spot of 6 or more hours of direct light, and space plants about 20-30 cm apart.

Fertilizing

Enrich the bed before planting by digging in well-rotted manure or compost into a deep trench; this rich, fertile, well-drained soil high in organic matter gives the strongest growth. Once plants are actively growing, feed with a high-potassium fertiliser such as tomato feed, following the label instructions to keep blooms coming.

Care

Sweet peas are climbers, so provide trellis or netting on tall posts and set plants within about 5-7.5 cm of their support. When young plants reach about 7.5-10 cm tall, pinch out the shoot tip to encourage bushier, branched growth. Keep the soil evenly moist and mulch to hold moisture; in dry weather check every 3-4 days and water deeply to the full root depth, especially in Upper Egypt. Watch for slugs, snails and aphids. Cut stems when about half the flowers are open, and deadhead spent blooms often to prolong flowering.
