Growing Basil at Home: A Beginner’s Guide | tna W rna

May 30, 2026 / By Anas Heaba / in Smart Farming & Technology

Basil is one of the easiest and most fragrant herbs to grow at home. A single pot on a sunny windowsill can give you fresh leaves for months. Here is how to grow it successfully in Egypt.

Best time to sow

Basil loves warmth. Sow in spring and autumn when the weather is mild. It germinates in 7–14 days.

Light and soil

Give basil full sun to light shade and a well-draining potting mix. A 2–3 litre pot is enough for one healthy plant.

Watering

Water moderately and let the top of the soil dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.

Harvesting for more leaves

Pinch the top sets of leaves regularly and remove flower buds as they appear. This keeps the plant bushy and productive for much longer.

Uses

Fresh basil is perfect for cooking, pesto, salads and aromatic teas.
