How to Grow Common Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) in Egypt: A Complete Guide | tna W rna

Jun 11, 2026 / By Anas Heaba / in Growing Guides

Common Hollyhock (Alcea rosea), known in Egyptian seed shops as ختمية, is one of the easiest tall flowering plants to raise from seed. With its towering spikes of large, funnel-shaped, multicoloured blooms, it brings real height and old-fashioned charm to any Egyptian garden. This guide walks you through growing it successfully under our climate.

Why grow Common Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) in Egypt

Hollyhock is an erect herbaceous plant that easily passes 1 m in height, with mature flower spikes reaching roughly 1.8–2.4 m tall and 0.3–0.6 m wide. The clustered, funnel-shaped flowers come in many colours, making it a striking choice for back borders, walls and fences. It is a biennial or short-lived perennial: it usually forms a leaf rosette in its first season and flowers the following one, rewarding a little patience with a dramatic display.

Best planting time in Egypt

The best time to sow in Egypt is autumn (September–October). Hot summer is poor for germination because seedlings scorch, while autumn soil and air temperatures (about 18–28°C) sit right in the ideal germination range. Sowing now lets plants build a strong rosette through the mild Egyptian winter (Nov–Feb) and exploit the natural winter chill, so they bloom in spring to early summer (Apr–Jun) before peak heat. In the cooler, humid Delta, autumn sowing works well but humidity raises rust pressure, so space generously and water at the base. In hotter, drier Upper Egypt, sow slightly later (Oct–Nov), shelter seedlings from harsh afternoon sun, and water more consistently. Spring sowing (Feb–Mar) is a secondary window but risks early heat.

How to plant

Hollyhock seeds need light to germinate, so never bury them deeply. Sow at a shallow depth of about 6 mm, or simply press the seeds onto the surface and barely cover them. Soaking the tough-coated seeds in warm water before sowing improves the germination rate. At about 16–21°C with steady moisture, seedlings usually emerge in roughly 10–14 days. Space plants about 60 cm apart to give the tall spikes room and to keep air moving, which is your first defence against rust. Choose a spot in full sun (6+ hours of direct light) to light shade, in fertile, well-drained soil, sheltered from strong winds.

Fertilizing

In good, fertile soil no extra feeding is essential. Hollyhock prefers loams rich in organic matter, so the best move is to work well-rotted garden compost into the bed before planting. After planting, apply a layer of well-rotted compost about 10 cm deep as a mulch — this enriches the soil, feeds the plant slowly and helps hold moisture, which suits its medium water needs.

Care & watering

Keep seedlings and young plants consistently moist, making sure the top 15 cm of soil stays damp but never waterlogged. Once established, plants have medium water needs and mainly need watering during prolonged dry spells. Always water at the soil base, not over the leaves — wet foliage encourages hollyhock rust, the main disease, which shows as orange-yellow spots on the upper leaf surface and brown-red pustules beneath. Manage it by spacing widely for airflow, watering at the base, promptly removing infected leaves, and clearing all debris in autumn. Watch for slugs, spider mites and the hollyhock weevil. In windy spots, push a bamboo cane or stout stake beside each stem and tie the stems in as they grow.

Harvest

With Hollyhock, the “harvest” is the flower show itself. Plants started early indoors may bloom in their first year; otherwise they flower the following season. Flowering runs from early summer into autumn, sending up tall spikes of large blooms. To collect your own seeds, let some spikes dry on the plant at the end of the season, then save the seed from spent flowers for next autumn's sowing.

Where to get the seeds

For a reliable start, sow fresh, quality seed. At tna W rna you can order بذور ختمية (Hollyhock seeds) to grow these tall flowering spikes at home. If you are planting a larger border or want a generous batch, the بذور زهور الخطمية pack is another great option. Sow them this autumn, follow the spacing and base-watering tips above, and you'll be set for a spectacular spring-to-summer display.
