Why grow Scarlet Flax / Flowering Flax (Linum grandiflorum) in Egypt

Scarlet flax, also called flowering flax or red flax, is one of the easiest and fastest annual flowers you can grow from seed. It produces masses of delicate, saucer-shaped blooms about 4 cm wide, in rose-pink to glowing scarlet shades with a dark centre. The slender plants reach roughly 10 to 50 cm tall and carpet a bed in colour. Because Linum grandiflorum is a cool-season annual native to North Africa, it feels right at home in Egypt's mild winters and rewards you with a long display before the summer heat arrives. It is also wonderfully low-maintenance: generally pest- and disease-free, drought-tolerant once established, and happy in poor, light soil.

Best planting time in Egypt

In Egypt, sow during the cool season: from autumn (October to November) through the mild winter and into early spring. This plant dislikes heat at flowering, so the hot summer months (often above 35 C) are unsuitable for sowing or bloom. In the Delta and Lower Egypt, sow in October and November for a late-winter to spring display. In hotter Upper Egypt, sow earlier in autumn (around October) so the flowers finish before the early, intense heat. Cool-season sowing in warm climates consistently outperforms spring sowing, giving taller, stronger plants. You can also make successive sowings every 2 to 3 weeks to keep flowers coming for longer.

How to plant

Flax dislikes transplanting, so always direct-sow the seeds exactly where you want the plants to grow, whether in the ground or in a wide container. Choose a spot in full sun (6 or more hours of direct sun a day) with light, free-draining loam or sandy soil. Good drainage is essential. Sow the seeds very shallowly, barely covering them to about 5 mm deep, because they need light to germinate well, do not bury them. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Seeds usually emerge in about 20 to 25 days, though they can appear in as little as 10 to 14 days under warm, ideal conditions. Once the seedlings are up, thin them to about 15 cm apart. Rather than moving seedlings (which they resent), simply sow more seed directly wherever you want extra plants.

Fertilizing

Less is more with flax. Do not feed heavily, and avoid added fertilizer and manure, because rich soil produces leafy growth and fewer flowers. Light, moderately fertile, well-drained soil gives the best bloom display. No routine feeding is needed through the season, which makes this one of the most carefree flowers in the garden.

Care & watering

Keep the soil consistently moist (but never waterlogged) while seeds germinate and seedlings establish. After that, reduce watering, the plant is drought-tolerant once settled and prefers to dry out a little between waterings. To prolong flowering, cut back about half of the flowering stems by half around early to mid summer; this encourages a fresh flush of blooms. Watch occasionally for slugs, snails and aphids, with cutworms or grasshoppers appearing now and then, but serious problems are rare.

Harvest

Scarlet flax is grown for its display rather than a crop. Flowers appear from late winter and spring (in Egypt's cool season) and each individual bloom lasts about a day before being quickly replaced by the next, so the show looks continuous. For cut stems, snip in the early morning when buds are just opening. If you leave some seed heads to ripen on the plant, Linum grandiflorum readily self-seeds and often returns the following season on its own.

Where to get the seeds

For a reliable start, sow fresh, good-quality seed. At tna W rna you can order flowering flax seeds (بذور كتان الزهور), with an alternative flowering flax seed pack also available. If you have a colour in mind, choose the warm red scarlet flax seeds or the softer white flowering flax seeds to suit your bed. Sow them in the cool season, in full sun and light soil, and enjoy weeks of effortless colour.
