The China Aster (Callistephus chinensis, also listed as the synonym Aster chinensis) is one of the most rewarding annuals for the cutting garden. Its generous, star-shaped flowers open 7-12 cm across in a clear palette of white, red, purple-blue and violet, sitting on upright stems that fill vases and brighten beds alike. Grown mainly as a cut flower and bedding plant, it delivers an abundant, long-lasting display that few annuals can match.

Planting

Sow seed shallowly, only about 3 mm deep, and cover lightly. Start indoors in cell trays roughly 6-8 weeks before transplanting. Seed germinates in 10-14 days at a soil temperature of 21-22°C. In Egypt's hot climate, sow in late summer to early autumn (around September-October) since sustained temperatures above 27°C halt flowering. Transplant outdoors 6-8 weeks later (October-November) once the heat eases and frost danger has passed, spacing plants about 15-30 cm apart; tall cut-flower types appreciate wider spacing and support. Choose full sun for the strongest flowering, though partial shade is tolerated.

Fertilizing

Feed with a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 once the soil warms and buds emerge, then repeat every 3-4 weeks. Liquid feeds suit this frequent schedule. Avoid high-nitrogen formulas, which encourage leaves at the expense of flowers, and reduce or stop feeding as bloom production declines.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, watering deeply once or twice weekly when the top 2-5 cm is dry. Water seedlings from below with good ventilation to limit damping-off. Thin once plants have 2-3 sets of true leaves; pinching is not needed. Watch for aphids, leafhoppers and spider mites, and use insect netting and yearly site rotation against aster yellows. Harvest when outer florets just begin to open for a vase life of 7-10 days.
