White Radish from tna W rna gives you those long, pale, ivory-white roots with smooth skin and crisp, snow-white flesh. The flavour is clean and mildly peppery, far gentler than the small red salad types, turning sweeter and milder when grown steadily in cool weather. Its juicy crunch makes it a favourite raw in salads and slaws, finely sliced into wraps, or lightly pickled the Egyptian way, while the tender young leaves can be enjoyed too. As a winter/oriental-style radish it forms a larger, longer root that pushes its shoulders up out of the soil when ready, so harvesting is simple and satisfying.

Planting

Radish is a cool-season crop that grows best when day temperatures stay around 10-24 C, which is why the mild Egyptian winter suits it perfectly. As a winter/oriental type, sow the seed a little deeper than salad radishes, around 2 cm down, directly where it will grow, since radish dislikes root disturbance and is not transplanted. Choose an open, sunny site; light or partial shade is fine to keep plants cool. Space larger winter radishes about 15-20 cm apart with roughly 15 cm between rows. Seedlings usually emerge in about 3-10 days, faster in warm soil and slower in cool soil. For a steady supply make repeated small sowings every 10-14 days, and avoid hot, dry spells, because sustained temperatures above roughly 21 C and long, hot days push the plants to bolt and run to flower.

Fertilizing

Prepare the bed with aged compost before sowing, then side-dress with more aged compost around midseason. Avoid fresh manure and high-nitrogen feeds, as these encourage lush leaves at the expense of the roots you want. A balanced or low-nitrogen feed is best, and root crops respond well to a phosphorus-leaning blend such as 5-10-10. This steady, gentle feeding helps the plant put its energy into a firm, well-shaped root rather than excess foliage.

Care

Consistent moisture is the key to crisp, juicy, non-split roots: keep the soil evenly moist and aim for about 2.5 cm of water per week, soaking the bed thoroughly at least once a week. Sandy soils dry out faster and need watering more often than heavy clay. Irregular or insufficient watering makes the roots woody and hot-tasting, so do not let the bed dry out. Thin the seedlings about a week after they emerge, leaving winter/daikon types around 5-10 cm or more apart so the roots have room to swell. Watch for common pests such as flea beetles nibbling small holes in the leaves, cabbage root fly maggots tunnelling into roots, and slugs and snails on young seedlings; a floating row cover or fleece together with steady moisture helps protect the crop. Winter radishes mature in about 50-60 days, and you will see the root shoulders pushing up out of the soil when they are ready. Harvest promptly, because over-mature roots turn woody, pithy and split.
