Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are the classic culinary member of the onion family, distinct from Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) sold separately. The trade name 'ثوم معمر' means 'perennial garlic', yet this is true Chives: slim, tubular green leaves with a gentle onion-garlic flavour that lifts salads, omelettes, soups and creamy dips when snipped fresh. In spring and summer the clumps crown themselves with purple, star-shaped flower clusters that are both edible and ornamental.
Sow seed in early spring during the cool season, setting it 0.5-1 cm deep, covering lightly and watering well. In cold areas start indoors and plant out once seedlings reach about 10 cm. Aim for a soil temperature of 15-21 C, where germination takes roughly 7-14 days. Thin or space clumps 15-20 cm apart in well-drained soil rich in organic matter at pH 6.0-7.0, in full sun or partial shade, with 6-8 hours of light ideal.
Soil rich in organic matter usually supplies enough nutrients, and over-fertilizing is harmful. For weak plants, apply one light dose of 5-10-5 fertilizer in spring. Feed container or indoor chives with a liquid fertilizer at half the recommended strength every 4-6 weeks through the growing season.
Keep the soil moist while plants are actively growing, and water newly planted chives during dry spells in the first summer; container plants need evenly moist compost. Light mulch helps retain moisture. Good drainage, adequate spacing and morning watering guard against aphids, rust, thrips and root rot. Harvest from spring to autumn by snipping leaves about 2-3 cm above the soil; regular cutting near the base drives the most vigorous regrowth.
